about

What you are looking at right now is the most ridiculous thing I've ever done, so let me explain!

I love MIDI files, I find them fascinating, I love listening to them through different devices to hear the differences from the samples or methods of generating waveforms each have. They're great fun to mess around with and even though some people might find they sound funny, particularly when you try recreating guitar solos and the such, over the years I've learned to look past that and just enjoy them for what they are.

So, as I love MIDI files, I've been creating them for a very, very long time. I got started in around 2001, 2002 when I had my first computer and got Anvil Studio. In fact, MIDI files are important in my creation process since I input the drums and keyboards manually in Guitar Pro 5, and export them as MIDI files that I then process in FL Studio to become the drum tracks and keyboard tracks that end up in my albums. Since MIDI is such an integral part of it, why not make an album without any of the extra processing and leave the files as MIDI and release them?

Yes, I did exactly that! The idea came up at first when I started experimenting sequencing keyboards and pianos using my Korg microKey instead of inputting the notes manually on Guitar Pro. The first track to receive that treatment chronologically was Departure, and since then I've been doing it sparingly in other songs. I found the idea of having human playing on a MIDI file fascinating and I wanted to have my own, then I started thinking about how much I could improve the original Guitar Pro tabs by carefully mixing the instruments properly, handling the reverb, chorus and variation effects, adding some simulated delay to the leads (very fun to do, I got the idea from Bobby Prince, who mentioned doing that on an interview for some of his Doom MIDIs). Since this is tailored to a specific sound module, this was easier to mix than the General MIDI version of the album and required no compromises in regards of volume levels.

What's interesting is that most of the drum tracks here are the ones I used to create the final ones for the albums, so they have some interesting dynamics going on that the original tabs don't have, and every thing that I sequenced myself ended up here in the album, so there's some actual real human playing between the layers of robotic Guitar Pro playing! You get to hear my lousy keyboard playing on Departure and Charlotte's Lullaby (actually, if you play that MIDI file through Addictive Keys, you get the exact same thing found in Winter's Damnation!).

Overall, I feel very proud of the result of this experiment and I dedicated more hours to this than I'd like to admit, but it was all good fun! I hope you enjoy it too!

Thanks for listening!
